Local Notes: Tea Day, Snooker Club Refurbished, Community Choir Show

Castlerea Celtic Snooker Club has just been refurbished and is now open to new members. Membership is €60 per year and it costs €4/hour for the lights. The club has been in existence since April 2004. It consists of two full size Riley snooker tables each contained within their own room, so no bumping in to other players when trying to play your shot. The tables are in perfect condition, so no one to blame but yourself if you miss that crucial black ball off the spot. The club is located within the clubhouse of Castlerea Celtic Football Club at the Demesne. To join the snooker club download the Castlerea Celtic app. When you have it downloaded open up the app. click on the menu in the bottom right hand corner and click on memberships. Choose the join today option. Then pick snooker. Here you can pay the €60 membership with a debit or credit card. Alternatively you can call 0863685680 and pay. Once you've joined, details on how to enter the premises will be shared with the new members.

On Thursday, May 7th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Castlerea Day Care Centre, at Rampark will hold a Tea Day in aid of Alzheimer’s. If anyone would like to host their very own Tea Day, go to www. alzheimer.ie for further information. Organisers would love to see as many people as possible get involved this year to help raise awareness and vital funds for local services in the county.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for April 22nd was 37. Winners of this week’s lotto were Joe Kenny, Peter Hester, Daryl Kelly, Dermot Henry, and Keith McDermot. Each receive €100.
The death occurred peacefully on Saturday, April 13th at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown of Mrs Kathleen McLoughlin (née Ward). Beloved wife of the late Sean McLoughlin, St. Patrick Street, Castlerea and Carton Square, Maynooth and formerly of Abbeyfeale, Limerick. Predeceased by her mother, Kit, father, Maurice and sister, Eileen. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and jolly person who was well liked. She had a great interest in music with Daniel O’Donnell her favourite singer. She loved playing Telly Bingo. She was a woman of great faith and had a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock. Kathleen will be deeply regretted by her sister, Nora Coll (Leixlip) and brother, Dennis (Abbeyfeale), sisters-in-law, Mary Teresa and Madeline, brother-in-law, Con, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many friends. Her remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home on Wednesday evening to St. Patrick’s Church and following Mass of the Resurrection on Thursday morning celebrated by Fr. Mario Zulki, cremation took place at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan. Her remains will be interred with her husband Sean at a later date. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing and music of the Castlerea Church Choir. May Kathleen’s gentle soul rest in peace.

The death occurred peacefully on Saturday, April 18th at home, surrounded by her loving family, of Mrs Helen Vaughan (née Cruise), Cloonsuck, Castlerea. Predeceased by her parents, William and Margaet, brother, Michael, sister, Mary McNamara and recently by her husband Sean. Deceased was a wonderful neighbour who always had time for people. She was a great community person and helped out for many years as a member of the altar society and also helped out each year with the Cloonbonniffe auction. Indeed, she was always willing to help at events in the Cloonbonniffe area. She was very proud of her family and grandchildren and of their achievements and was ever present with husband Sean supporting them in whatever games they were playing. She was a woman of great faith and had a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be sadly missed by her son, Thomas (Castlerea); daughters Rosemary Becker (Munich), Mairead Lyons (Keash) and Denise Dunleavy (Castlerea); her adored grandchildren, Leanne, Sean, Conor, Ryan, Amelia, Katie, Lucia, Matthew, Tom, James, Emma and Ethan; her brothers, Thomas (Taughnara), Joseph (Northampton), and Peter (Ballinlough); her sister, Rose Flaherty (Kilmaine); daughter-in-law, Olivia; sons-in-law, Jens, Aidan and Seamus; sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed from McDonagh’s Funeral Home to St. Brigid’s Church, Cloonbonniffe and following Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday morning celebrated by Fr. John McManus, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. Before the final blessing her son Thomas and daughter Rosemary read the eulogy. Her daughter Mairead read a reflection ‘Mother’. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Brian Flanagan. May Helen’s gentle soul rest in peace.
Castlerea Community Choir will be back in the Trinity Arts Centre for a summer show on May 16th at 7 p.m... The night will feature hot hits and cool harmonies from the last four decades. This will be a night of entertainment not to be missed.

Congratulations are extended to Mrs Florrie (Flo) Corcoran of Dudley, UK, who celebrated her 75th birthday with family and friends on Monday, April 20th. She is sister of Danny Burke, Castlerea. Florrie and her late husband Jimmie, who passed away in July 2023, went to the UK as two young people in 1968, but they always made a point of visiting their family and friends both in Castlerea and Donamon each year. Flo would like to thank all who sent her good wishes on Facebook and those who made phone calls and sent cards on this great occasion. Here’s wishing her many more happy birthdays in the years ahead.
Congratulations are also extended to Declan Walsh, St. Patrick Street, Castlerea who celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday, April 18th in Hester’s Golden Eagle Lounge. Declan, now retired, worked for the Brothers of Charity for many years. He was joined for the celebrations by members of his family, many friends and former work colleagues. A great friend Paschal Fitzmauirce told some great stories of Declan and himself growing up on St. Patrick’s Street. Danny Burke also said a few words and rendered a verse of a song. A great night was had by all. Declan would like to that the organisers, all who attended, the DJ, all who sent him good wishes and presents, the Hester family, Paschal and Danny. Wishing Declan many happy birthdays in the years ahead.

The Castlerea Community School First Year boys’ team defeated Gortnorabbey Community College in the quarter-final of the 13 a side Division (D) Connacht Colleges’ Championship at Swinford on Tuesday, April 14th on the score of 10-16 to 4-6. This was a fine game of football with both teams giving it everything and taking some fine scores. This was a great performance by Castlerea with all sixteen players used playing their part. Team and scorers: Harry Tobin 1-2, Lorenzo Acube, Daniel Marea, James Cahill, Ben Drury, Daniel Connelly, Yuri Farias 1-1, Tom Vaughan 4-6, Odhran Higgins 0-4, Blake Burke 1-0, Senan Higgins 0-1, Daniel Foley 0-1, Aaron Harte 3-1. Subs used Labonzi Nkuphu, Arthur Debrowski, Eric Belog. Team manger Richie Britten. They will play the semi-final on Tuesday, April 28th.
