Local Notes: Tower Bar Sessions, Women's Shed, Irish Classes

There was a warm and heartfelt atmosphere at Elphin Community College last week as staff and students gathered to bid farewell to Remi, who recently concluded his time at the school.

FAREWELL TO ELPHIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT 

There was a warm and heartfelt atmosphere at Elphin Community College last week as staff and students gathered to bid farewell to Remi, who recently concluded his time at the school. The occasion was marked with tea, cake, and plenty of conversation. It gave everyone an opportunity to reflect on Remi’s time in the school and to wish him well for the future. Special thanks to Ms Tully and Orla, whose efforts ensured the gathering was both enjoyable and memorable for all involved. Remi departs with the best wishes of the entire school community, expressing the hope that he will stay in touch in the years ahead. He will always have a place at Elphin Community College.

SPCA STREET COLLECTION 

Roscommon SPCA will be holding its annual fundraising street collection in various locations throughout Elphin on Saturday, May 2nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Roscommon SPCA is run completely by volunteers who give up their free time to fundraise and work tirelessly each weekend to gather enough funds to cover upcoming costly vet bills. Support would be very much needed and appreciated. All donations go directly to animal welfare in County Roscommon.

LATE MR WILLIAM BILLY FLEMING 

The death occurred on April 11th of Mr William (Billy) Fleming, Cavendish Road, Kilburn, London and late of The Green, Clara. He passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia (Patsy, née Carney, formerly, Elphin), parents, William and Mary, and his brothers, Eddie, Matt and P.J.. Billy will be sadly missed by his loving sisters, Josie and Vicky; sisters-in-law, Ena and Ann; brothers-in-law, Padraig, Noel and Tommy; nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

ABBEYCARTRON NS 

Thanks are extended to Sarah and Michael White who have generously donated a lawn mower and strimmer to Abbeycartron NS. This will help with the upkeep of wonderful sensory garden which Sarah played such an important role in setting up. It is very thoughtful of them and really appreciated by everyone in the school community.

COMMUNITY GAMES TALENT COMPETITION 

Expressions of interest are invited for all children aged between 6 and 16 years for Elphin Community Games talent teams. The talent event takes place on Thursday, May 15th in Kilbride Community Centre at 6 p.m.. If your child is interested please contact the committee, e-mail elphin@communitygames.ie.

MOTHER, BABY AND TODDLER GROUP

The Elphin mother, baby and toddle groups meets from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in. Elphin Community Centre every second Wednesday during term time, €3 per day. For information contact Helena on 0879759076 or Niamh on 0892260223.

BALLINAMEEN AND ELPHIN WOMEN'S SHED 

Ballinameen and Elphin Women’s Shed will hold a short taster session on Thursday, April 30th at 6 p.m.. This short session, lasting 30 minutes, will cover health, wellbeing and breathwork. Tea and refreshments afterwards. Free to all members, €5 to non-members. All welcome to see what the group is all about.

IRISH CLASSES 

Ciorcal Cruachain thanks all the attendees of the recent Irish language classes held in Rathcroghan Visitor Centre. The classes were made possible by the support of Roscommon County Council and Boyle Municipal Council. Thanks to teachers Mike and Maire. The enthusiasm for our native language has been an inspiration. It is hoped to resume again in autumn.

DAY CENTRE 

Elphin Day Centre has a new meals on wheels van on the road. Thanks to Clar funding two vans are now covering a greater area. If anyone wishes to avail of the day centre services ring 0719635566 or 0876803675.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

The traditional Irish music sessions are continuing each Tuesday in the Tower Inn at 8.30 p.m. with a great mix of musicians and instruments, which combine culture and heritage with an enjoyable night’s entertainment. So whether you are a musician or listener come along to the Tower Inn and support this great event.The next singers’ night in the Tower Inn will be on Sunday, May 3rd starting at 8.30 p.m…This is an event that will prove to be worth attending whether you are a singer or listener as all genre of songs will be catered for.

CARETAKER RETIRES 

After over 20 years of dedicated service Gary, the caretaker at Elphin Community College is heading off into retirement. Gary will be missed all at the school and leaves big shoes to fill. ECC is now inviting applications for the role of caretaker to join the school community. Closing date for applications is May 1st.

TIDY TOWNS 

The Tidy Towns group mees on Saturday mornings at 10.30 a.m. in the day centre’s polytunnel. All welcome, even if you can only come now and again for half hour, every little counts.

AA meetings are held on Mondays at 8 p.m. in Elphin Community Centre.
