Douglas Hyde Community Games will hold its 2026 sports day at 12 noon sharp on this Saturday, May 2nd at the Ballinagare Leisure Centre, open to all children from the Douglas Hyde area. Events on the day are 60m & 80m (U-8), 100m & 200m (U-10), 100m & 600m (U-12), 100m & 800m (U-14) and 100m & 1500m (U-16). Parents/guardians must be present. The peaceful death occurred of Mrs Margaret Mary Keaveney, Whitechurch, Dublin and formerly of Leamoare, County Offaly, Ballycarron, County Tipperary and Corlis, Ballinagare on Wednesday, April 15th last at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin. Predeceased by her husband, Patrick (Ballindollaghan, Ballinagare), the late Mrs Keaveney (née Kinnarney) will be sadly missed and remembered with love by her daughter, Mary and her husband Alan; son, Andrew and his partner Denise; grandchildren; sisters, Nellie and Anne; brother, Jim; extended family, neighbours, her dear carer Thais and many friends. Her remains were removed from Gaynor's Funeral Home, Castlerea to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Ballinagare on Sunday evening week last. Following Requiem Mass on Monday, April 20th, Margaret was laid to rest in Baslick Cemetery.
Mrs Bridie Hogg (née Lavin), Mullingar, County Westmeath and formerly of Frenchpark passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 16th last. Bridie is deeply regretted by her loving family, her husband Michael; son, Adrian; daughters, Fiona and Yvonne; grandchildren, David and Robert; daughter-in-law, Ann Marie; Yvonne’s partner, Alan; sister, Nuala; sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed to the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar on Sunday week last. Following Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, April 20th, the funeral proceeded to Ballyglass Cemetery.
The peaceful death took place of Mrs Bridget O'Dowd, Galway City and formerly of Oldcastle, County Meath on Saturday, April 11th last at the University Hospital Galway. Sister of Connie Farrelly (Tibohine), the late Bridget is also survived by her husband, Willie; son, Alan; daughter-in-law, Tina; grandchildren, Max and Gracie; sister, Mollie; brothers, Paddy, Michael, Gerard and Peter; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral Mass on Thursday, April 16th last in The Good Shepherd Church, Doughiska was followed by a Cremation service in Shannon Crematorium.
Pray for the repose of the souls of Mrs Bertha Dooney, Edmondstown, Ballaghaderreen and formerly of Monasteraden; Mr Patsy O’Driscoll, Castlerea and formerly of Midleton, County Cork; Mr Charlie Beirne, Knockvicar, Boyle; Mrs Helen Vaughan, Cloonsuck, Castlerea and Mr Barrie Tomlinson, St Albans, England. May they rest in peace.
Masses will be held at 7 p.m. in Tibohine on Tuesday (28th), Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (30th), Ballinagare at 7 p.m. and Fairymount at 8 p.m. on Friday (1st), Tibohine at 7 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (2nd) and Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday (3rd). Visits to the sick and housebound will take place in Fairymount and Tibohine on Thursday (30th) and in Frenchpark and Ballinagare on Friday, May 1st next.

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, April 25th last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 14, 21, 24 and 28. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were G. Beirne, Ciara/Thomas/Sarah, Sean Creighton, Aidan Higgins and Seamus O’Gara. The next draw (jackpot €3,400) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, May 2nd. Upcoming events at the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre Tulsk include a two lecture seminar entitled, ‘Reviving the Oenach – Bealtine’, on Saturday, May 16th, 10.50 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Tickets available on Eventbrite. Also the eighth international conference on the Ulster Cycle of Tales will take place from June 23rd to June 25th. Tulsk Community Games annual Sports Day takes place at Tulsk GAA grounds on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4th from 1.30 p.m.. Featured on the day will be track races, novelty races and a range of field events. The day is always a sporting and social highlight in the local community that is not to be missed.
Preparations are well underway in Tulsk for a milestone weekend of celebrations to mark the official opening of the new playing facility and walkway. ‘The Tulsk Hooley’ will take place from Friday, May 29th to Monday, June 1st (the June Bank Holiday Weekend) which promises to be a weekend to remember. Underage blitzes, legends matches, team reunions, official opening ceremony and a grand finale are just some of the highlights planned. Evening entertainment will be hosted in a marquee in the village. Members of Tulsk GAA are inviting friends and supporters near and far to join in the celebrations and reconnect with former clubmates and old friends. Ciorcal Cruachain would like to express their gratitude to all the attendees of the recent Irish language classes which were held in Rathcroghan Visitor Centre. There classes were made possible by the support of Roscommon County Council and Boyle Municipal District for which the organisers are very grateful. Míle buíochas to the teachers, Mike and Máire. Their enthusiasm fhas been an inspiration to all who attended.
Tulsk hosted old rivals Oran in the O’Gara Cup at the weekend. Following an entertaining encounter, the side’s finished all square on a scoreline of Tulsk 2-17 to Oran’s 3-14. During the match, the mighty Brown Bull of Cooley dropped in for a surprise cameo at the match. ‘The bull’ had a cheeky kick-about, tested out the turf, and got a proper feel for the pitch… all in preparation for the upcoming Pool-ley showdown on the June Bank Holiday Weekend.

The next meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society will take place on Tuesday, May 12th in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre from 8 p.m. All members are invited to attend the meeting – new members are welcome. Next month’s lecture will be given by acclaimed genealogist, Eilish Feeley on the recently published 1926 census. Last week’s lecture was given by a good friend of the society, Dr. Kieran O’Conor of the University of Galway Archaeology Department, on the history of Roscommon Abbey. Membership fees for the society are €25 for individual membership and €30 for family membership. For those attending once off lectures, there is a nominal fee of €5 per lecture.
Well done to all the players who put up a great fight in their games at Feile 2026, ahead of what is sure to be another great season. Congratulations to overall winners Athleague. Thanks are also extended to Paul Moylan for sponsoring the food for the girls after the games.
Well done to the school’s basketball team who are through to the Two Teacher 'B' Final, despite their loss Aughrim NS in the 'A' competition. Nevertheless, the team have competed wonderfully well to advance in the competition – well done to all concerned.
