The community of Ballaghaderreen is “shocked and saddened” following the tragic death of a man in the town in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Jordon Nevin, aged in his 30s, passed away at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin after he was critically injured in an incident on Barrack Street.
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr Liam Callaghan, said gardaí are actively investigating the events that have led to this “tragic incident”.
“It is important that anybody with evidence should contact the gardaí in Castlerea where a special investigation team is in place. The local community is shocked and saddened by the news that happened during the Christmas and New Year,” he said.
The Fine Gael councillor complimented the emergency services and gardaí, and offered his deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased man who, he said, were grieving the loss of a loved one at this time.
Ballaghaderreen based councillor Micheál Frain extended his heartfelt sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
“My thoughts and prayers are with them at this deeply painful time. It is so important that this situation continues to be treated with compassion, dignity and sensitivity - both in the media and on social platforms,” said the Independent councillor.
Cllr Frain sincerely thanked the gardaí and all members of the emergency services for the vital and often difficult work they carry out every day.
“Their need for greater resources and support must continue to be recognised and addressed. To the people of Ballaghaderreen, I want to reassure you that I have been in ongoing contact with garda management on your behalf,” he said.
