Local candidates in the upcoming General Election have been urged to support the delivery of an apprenticeship training centre proposed for Roscommon Town.

A year ago this month, a sale had been agreed on a two and a half acre site identified in the middle of the town for the project between the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) and the property owner.

However, the site which includes a 22,000 square foot building, comprising workshops ideally suited for such a training centre, is now back on the market for sale, leaving the future of the project unclear.

Fine Gael councillor Gareth Scahill said he and his fellow Roscommon members of the GRETB, councillors Dominic Connolly and Larry Brennan (FF) would now be using every influence they can to ensure the apprenticeship centre is a key issue for any general election candidate.

“The three of us on the GRETB and the support of our fellow councillors in County Roscommon will not be found wanting in delivering this for the county,” he added.

Pointing out that representations had also been made recently at “higher levels”, Cllr Scahill commended Independent councillor Laurence Fallon and former Independent councillor Kathleen Shanager for their previous work on the project as members of the GRETB.
