ATHLEAGUE

SENIOR TEAM: The senior camogie team were defeated by St. Dominic’s, 1-9 to 0-8, in their second outing of this year’s championship in Creggs on Saturday evening. They are away to Oran on Saturday evening next in Rockfield at 6 p.m..

UNDERAGE NEWS: U-8 and U-10 training takes place on Wednesday evening in Athleague at 6.30 p.m.. The final U-8 blitz of the season takes place in Lisnamult on Saturday, September 14th, at 11 a.m.. The U-10s will be in action the following Friday (venue to be decided). The club has two U-12 teams in next Saturday’s league finals in Tulsk. The A team are in action at 1 p.m. and the B team play at 2 p.m.. The club would like to wish the 29 players and their managements the best of luck. Support would be appreciated.

U-18 FINAL: Well done to the Athleague/Oran minor team that defeated St. Dominic’s by 2-6 to 1-6 in their county final in Knockcroghery on Monday evening. Eight Athleague players were part of the panel — Grace Killian, Karen Whyte, Alannah McCormack, Tara O’Brien, Ava Lynch, Jessica Coyle, Erin Whyte and Abbie Kane.

GOOD LUCK: Best of luck to club members who have started secondary school. Best of luck also to children and Third Level students returning to primary schools, colleges and universities. Hopefully, they will continue to play camogie in their respective environments.

BALLINAMEEN

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS: Well done to the Benetti Menswear sponsored junior team who defeated Kilglass Gaels in the third round of the Junior A championship on Sunday afternoon. The results means that they finish top of the group and will go into the quarter-finals as one of the four seeded teams. The quarter-finals are scheduled to take place on the weekend of September 20th/21st. The draw for the quarter-finals will take place after the preliminary quarter-final between St. Brigid’s and St. Ronan’s this weekend.

UNDERAGE SCENE: The Elphin/Ballinameen minor footballers recorded a good win over St. Ciaran’s in the Division Two championship on Tuesday evening. They play St. Dominic’s on Tuesday, September 2nd, in Orchard Park at 7 p.m..

50/50 DRAW: The monthly 50/50 draw took place in Wynne’s Bar, Boyle, on Sunday evening. Congratulations to this month’s winners: Anna and Frank Dwyer, Killaraght, who won €2,175. The club would like to thank everyone who supported the draw and all those who helped out with ticket sales on the night. Thanks also to Wynne’s for hosting the draw alongside sponsors, the Peppermill Restaurant and the Crossbar. The next draw takes place on September 28th in the Crossbar.

NORTH ROSCOMMON: The club would like to wish the Ballinameen representatives and all the North Roscommon team the very best of luck in the senior championship preliminary quarter-final against Elphin this weekend. The game takes place on Sunday in Abbey Park, Boyle, at 1 p.m..

BOYLE

LOTTO NEWS: Match three winners from last weekend’s lotto draw were Brendan Heaslip and Clare Toman. The jackpot stands at €7,000.

CAMOGIE: The U-14 girls will play their championship semi-final against Four Roads in Ballyforan on September 8th. The U-12 Cheetahs meet Athleague in their D final on Saturday next in Tulsk at 1 p.m.. The U-12 Leopards will play Oran in the E final on Saturday in Tulsk at 12 p.m..

LGFA: The U-12 Group A girls will meet Castlerea St Kevins in Castlerea on September 4th at 6.15 p.m.. The U-19 girls will play St. Croan’s in the Division Three final on September 4th at 6.45 p.m. in the Abbey Park.

UNDERAGE BOYS: The U-14 Division A boys will play St. Brigid’s in Kiltoom at 7 p.m. on September 4th. The U-18 boys meet St. Brigid’s in Kiltoom at 7 p.m. on September 4th.

ADULT MEN: The McGovern Civils sponsored senior footballers defeated Oran by 2-23 to 2-16 to secure top spot in their group and a seeded quarter-final berth (see page 11). The Cooney Motors sponsored junior footballers lost out to St. Croan’s, but will still be a seeded team for the quarter-finals.

CASTLEREA ST. KEVIN’S

LOTTO: Lucky dip winners in last weekend’s lotto draw were Tommy Cook, Eddie Creaton, Joe Sharkey, Mia Doyle, and Emma Corcoran. Next week’s jackpot stands at €5,300 for the draw is in Silke’s Bar.

OTHER NEWS: The minor footballers travel to Woodmount to play Pádraig Pearses in the championship on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.. The senior football championship relegation semi-final against Western Gaels has been fixed for this Sunday in Ballinlough at 2.30 p.m.. Thank you to Fr John McManus, Jackie Kenny, Susan Mannion and everyone who participated in the beautiful Mass in the clubhouse last Thursday evening. A big shoutout to Martina Keenan and the committee who put everything together.

KILBRIDE

WEEKLY NEWS: The U-12 footballers continued their impressive form with a 27-11 victory against Boyle and a 23-10 victory against Oran/St. Croan’s. The U-14 footballers produced a spirited performance before narrowly going down to Kilglass/St. Barry’s on a scoreline of 6-6 to 5-7. The U-16 footballers were edged out by Oran/St. Croan’s in a high-scoring thriller, 6-10 to 5-12. The minor footballers defeated St. Dominic’s by 3-10 to 2-10. Kilbride excelled in defence and showed a fantastic attitude throughout, with their young stars stepping up when it mattered most. The next game is against Strokestown on Wednesday, September 3rd, in Kilbride at 7.30 p.m.. The intermediate footballers gave everything in a fiercely contested championship clash against Shannon Gaels in Kilglass. Despite their grit and determination, however, they were narrowly edged out, 0-16 to 1-11 (see match report, page 14). The team now play Pádraig Pearses in a relegation play-off (see fixtures for details). The spirit, heart, and pride that define the club will be front and centre as they prepare for the battle ahead.

LGFA: Well done the U-12 girls who played their second game of the autumn league against Roscommon Gaels on Sunday evening. The U-16 girls stormed into the Division 1B knockout stages following a sensational victory, overturning a seven-point deficit to defeat Oran/St. Croan’s by 2-14 to 2-9. Kilbride’s “Rocky Rebels” edged a thrilling junior championship game against Pádraig Pearses on a scoreline of 4-7 to 4-4. INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Hard luck to the intermediate football team who were defeated by Éire Óg on Saturday last. Kilmore have been drawn to receive a bye into the quarter-finals in three weeks’ time.

ROUNDERS: On Sunday last, the men’s rounders team were involved in the All-Ireland junior final where they represented the club with great pride. The team battled hard throughout, but just fell short in the end. Well done to every player for their efforts and, no doubt, they will bounce back next year and go one better. Thanks to everyone who travelled and supported the team. A special thanks to the team sponsor, Taylor’s Bar, Drumsna, for making such a great effort with food on Sunday evening.

RACE NIGHT: The club’s annual race night will take place on Sunday, September 14th, in Earley’s, Hillstreet, starting at 7 p.m.. Horses are €20 and are on sale from players now. Sponsorship of a race is also available for €50. Some lucky person will win the top prize of €1,000 on the evening.

MASS: The months mind Mass for the club’s dear late friend, Don Connellan, will take place this Sunday in Moycullen Church at 12 noon.

ORAN

U-16 FOOTBALLERS: Hard luck to the Oran/St. Croan’s U-16 boys who came up just short against a strong Boyle team in Abbey Park on Friday. The home team started strongly, getting an early goal that was cancelled out by Dan Monaghan. Despite a brilliant two-pointer from Conor Muldoon, Boyle scored a fortuitous goal that gave them a five-point lead at half time, despite some excellent defending from John Garvey, James Murray and Kieran Murray. Boyle grabbed a third goal but the lads dug deep and carried the fight all the way to the final whistle, with Donnacha Sweeney and Conor Muldoon raising green flags, which were supplemented by points from Dan Monaghan, James O’Connor, James Murray and John Garvey. Well done to the team and management on a great effort.

SYMPATHY: The club was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Martin Cunningham, Oran. Martin spent most of his life in Woodside, New York, and was well-loved on both sides of the Atlantic. The club wishes to express its sincere sympathy to his family, friends and the wider community who remember him fondly. Mass will be offered for Martin in Cloverhill Church on September 13th at 7 p.m..

SENIOR FOOTBALLERS: Hard luck to the seniors who lost out to Boyle in a great game of football on Saturday. Well done to the Oran/St. Croan’s U-10 players who played at half time. Good luck to the seniors against Pádraig Pearses on Friday evening.

PÁDRAIG PEARSES

STRATEGIC DOCUMENT: On Sunday evening, the club had 60 energetic, positive and engaged participants in its clubhouse to get the ball rolling on its new five-year strategy document. This plan will encompass all areas of the club, including coaching and games development, communications and culture, finance and fundraising, club structures and governance, and infrastructure and facilities. Thanks to Teresa Hession and Frank Egan for facilitating the excellent session, and for the team from Roscommon GAA Coaching and Games for attending to assist with the discussions. The club was delighted to welcome parents, coaches, volunteers, local public representatives, community council members and other local groups who avail of Pearses’ facilities who came along to share their views. The next phase of the club development plan now needs further input from the wider club community, members and supporters of the club. ST. BARRY’S

SEAMUS KILCRANN, RIP: The club was saddened by the passing of former club officer and long-time supporter, Seamus Kilcrann, Cloonfad. Seamus was one of a band of club officers and members who had the vision to sow the seeds for the club’s playing facilities back in the 1980s, the fruits of which are still being enjoyed by the community. He went on to hold a number of positions within the club. Although he became less active in the club over time, he still attended games regularly and took great pride in local teams and players doing well. The club extends its sympathy to Kathleen, Shane, Nuala, Mícheál, Dermot, Niall, his sister Patsy, the Mulrennan family, and his wide circle of neighbours and friends. May he Rest In Peace.

LGFA NEWS: Good luck to the U-19 ladies’ football team in their Division One final against St. Dominic’s on Thursday evening, September 4th.

CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS: St. Barry’s bowed out of the intermediate football championship following a 1-14 to 0-6 loss against St. Michael’s in Orchard Park, Elphin, on Saturday evening (see match report, page 13). ST. DOMINIC’S

SENIOR FOOTBALLERS: The senior footballers lost out to Pádraig Pearses in the final round of the championship. They play the losers of Castlerea and Western Gaels in the relegation play-off final.

CAMOGIE: The U-16 camogie team recorded an impressive win against Athleague in Sunday. They have qualified for the championship semi-final in two weeks’ time. The minor camogie team were defeated by Oran/Athleague in their A final. The team battled hard but just couldn’t get over the line. Congratulations to Oran/Athleague on their three-in-a-row. The U-14 camogie team played Roscommon Gaels on Saturday, August 30th. Unfortunately, in the wind and rain, the game didn’t go St. Dominic’s way. St. Dominic’s are now in the County B final (time and date to be confirmed).

LGFA: The U-19 footballers play St. Barry’s in their Division One final on Thursday at 8 p.m.. The U-14 team play St. Brigid’s in their semi-final in Knockcroghery on Tuesday, September 2nd, at 6.30 p.m..

ST. FAITHLEACH’S

CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS: The senior footballers have finished second in Group A of the senior football championship following their 3-22 to 2-18 defeat against Clann na nGael in Strokestown on Friday evening. The quarter-final draw takes place in Kiltoom on September 10th after the play-off game between Pádraig Pearses and Oran.

LGFA: The junior ladies’ footballers play Castlerea in their championship quarter-final at O’Rourke Park on Sunday, September 14th, at 11 a.m..

MOO POO DRAW: Many thanks to all those who supported the fundraising draw on Saturday evening. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The adult men’s team’s Junior A football championship campaign came to an end, despite a 1-15 to 2-10 victory against St. Ronan’s at a wet and windy Croghan on Sunday last. Playing into a strong wind, Joseph’s kicked some early points from Paddy Fannon, Cormac Dolan and Bryan Dolan, alongside a well-worked Eoin Kiernan goal to lead by 1-8 to 1-6 at the break. A brilliant third quarter around the middle saw Joseph’s kick great points from Bryan Dolan, Paddy Fannon (four frees), and an inspirational Eoin Kiernan point to establish a five-point lead going into injury time. However, St. Ronan’s converted a penalty in additional time, which saw St. Joseph’s lose out on the knockout stages on scoring difference. Defenders Johnny Mannion, Conor O'Malley and Eoghan Gilleran, midfielders Ronan Garvey and Eoin Kiernan, and forwards Paul Gilleran, Paddy Fannon, Bryan Dolan and Cormac Dolan played well. Many thanks to supporters who travelled to the game.

ST. MICHAEL’S

LGFA: Best of luck to the U-14 Division Two team who play Strokestown in their Division 2B semi-final in Ardcarne Park on Tuesday, September 2nd, at 6.30 p.m., and to the Division Four team who travel to Johnstown on September 3rd to play Clann na nGael. The junior ladies’ footballers recorded a comprehensive 6-14 to 0-5 victory against St. Dominic’s in Knockcroghery on Thursday evening. They are away to Kilbride on Saturday, September 6th, at 5 p.m. where top spot in the group is up for grabs.

UNDERAGE NEWS: The minor footballers were beaten, 5-12 to 2-8, by a strong Kilmore/Shannon Gaels side in Ballyfarnon on Tuesday evening. The U-14 Division Four boys lost out to the same opposition, 4-14 to 3-7, in Cootehall. The U-14 Division Two boys produced a credible performance against Roscommon Gaels before going down to the home side in Lisnamult. The U-14 Division Four team play Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.. The Division Two team play Oran/St. Croan’s in Ardcarne Park on Thursday at 7 p.m.. The U-16 footballers are away to Roscommon Gaels in their final group game on Friday, September 5th, at 7 p.m.. The U-12 boys travel to Brewster Park, Enniskillen, on Saturday to play Enniskillen Gaels.

INTERMEDIATE MEN: The Joe Simon Home Garden and Build sponsored intermediate men’s football team closed out their group stages with a strong 1-14 to 0-6 win over St. Barry's in tough weather conditions in Elphin on Saturday evening. A special mention goes to goalkeeper Shane O’Dowd who landed 0-7 from placed balls.

FIRST AID: A huge thanks to Patrick, Damien and Nathan who delivered an excellent First Aid course to 11 coaches/players/mentors on Sunday. It was a full-day course which the GAA and the RNLI have come together and designed. Thanks to Neil Cox for organising the course.

SYMPATHY: The club extends its deepest sympathy to the Benson family, Keadue, on their recent bereavement. May Tom Rest In Peace.

ST. RONAN’S

TOM BENSON, RIP: There was a sense of shock and disbelief when news broke last Tuesday afternoon about the sudden death of Tom Benson, Keadue. The Benson family has a lifetime involvement with St. Ronan's GAA Club. Tom's son, Alan, is a member of the club’s Junior A football team. As a mark of respect, club members formed a guard of honour at Tom’s removal on Saturday. A minute's silence was observed prior to St. Ronan’s championship game against St. Joseph’s on Sunday. To Tom's heartbroken family, the club extends its deepest sympathy. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.

The result means that the lads now face a relegation play-off against Roscommon Gaels. CHAMPIONSHIPS: The senior footballers were defeated by Elphin, 2-13 to 1-13, in the championship on Friday evening (see page 8). The team play Castlerea St. Kevin’s in a relegation semi-final in Ballinlough on Sunday next at 2.30 p.m.. The junior footballers enjoyed a comprehensive 4-18 to 0-10 victory against Strokestown. SUMMER CAMP: There were 163 children in attendance at the club’s recent summer camp. Thank you to the coaches and volunteers who gave up their time to help make the camp a huge success.
