Seventy per cent of ballot boxes opened in Roscommon

Seventy per cent of ballot boxes for the Roscommon-Galway constituency have been opened, just over two hours after counting began at the Dr Hyde Centre in Roscommon this morning.

According to early tallies, Independent candidate Catherine Connolly looks set for a landslide victory, accounting for 63 per cent of votes tallied.

Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys has picked up 30 per cent of tallied votes, while Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin is just falling short at the minute of the required 12.5 per cent of votes to retain funding, tallying at 7 per cent.

Spoiled votes have accounted for 12 per cent of the tally, with messages expressing voters’ discontent at the selection of presidential candidates.
