LGFA championships continue, Lá na gClub in Pearses and Aidan Brogan remembered

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The senior camogie team play Four Roads in their final championship game of the round robin section in Creggs on Saturday next at 5.30 p.m.. The U-8 panel are having their end-of-year party on this Wednesday evening in the Fuerty GAA clubhouse at 6.30 p.m.. The final end-of-year county blitz, which was due to take place in Lisnamult on Saturday last, was postponed due to the inclement weather. It is hoped to stage the blitz on September 27th. The U-16 team play Carrick in their semi-final on Wednesday at 6.30 p.m.. The winners play Oran in the county final on September 28th. The club would like to congratulate the St. Ciaran’s U-14 team who won their county final on Sunday evening last. The majority of the team play with the camogie team who are also in final action on October 1st.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: The McGovern Civils sponsored senior men’s football team will be up against Pádraig Pearses in their senior football championship quarter-final on Sunday next in Enfield at 1 p.m.. The Cooney Motor sponsored junior men’s team face Western Gaels in their Junior A championship quarter-final on Saturday, September 20th, in Ardcarne Park at 5 p.m..
ADRIAN BROGAN, RIP: Last week, Boyle LGFA, GAA and Camogie lost one of its best supporters. The club extends heartfelt condolences to Karen, Caoimhe, Shona and Amy Brogan, and the extended Brogan and McGee families, on the passing of Adrian Brogan. Adrian was a respected coach with the club’s underage girls’ teams for over 15 years, bringing great energy and enthusiasm to the club. The Brogan family has been at the heart of the Boyle LGFA community, with Karen holding the positions of treasurer and chairperson. The girls have been players, with Amy currently playing with the U-16 girls’ team. Thank you to everyone who came out to take part in the guard of honour for Adrian. It was a wonderful tribute and testament to him.
LOTTO: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot. Lucky dip winners were Paul Gaynor, Linda Hanmore, Pat McGourty, Sam Keith, and PJ Corcoran. Next week’s jackpot for the draw in Doherty’s Bar stands at €5,500.
GAMES: Well done to the minor footballers who secured a great 2-9 to 1-6 victory against Kilmore/Shannon Gaels on Tuesday last. They team have now reached the county semi-finals, which is a great achievement for this group of talented players. Hard luck to the junior team who were defeated by Oran, 2-14 to 1-11, on Saturday last.
BON VOYAGE SHANE: Everyone in Castlerea St. Kevin’s would like to wish Shane Keenan the very best of luck in his new chapter. Shane is moving to London to start a new career in engineering, where he will be playing his football with North London Shamrocks.
MEN’S TEAMS: Best of luck to the club’s junior and senior football teams next weekend. The seniors take on Clann na nGael in their championship quarter-finals on Sunday in Strokestown at 2 p.m.. The junior footballers are away to Pádraig Pearses in Woodmount on Friday evening at 8 p.m..
UNDERAGE NEWS: Thank you to St. Michael’s GAA Club who hosted the Elphin U-10 team in a fantastic blitz on Saturday morning. Well done to the U-12 teams who had a win and a loss in games against St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s. Well done to the Elphin/Ballinameen U-16 team who recorded a nail-biting win over Kilglass/St. Barry’s in their final group game of the championship. Well done to the minor team who beat Strokestown to qualify for a home semi-final. Best of luck to the Elphin/Ballinameen U-14 team who play St. Aidan’s in their championship semi-final on Thursday in Ballyforan at 7 p.m..
UNDERAGE NEWS: The U-6 boys made the trip to Knockcroghery on Saturday to take on St. Dominic’s. Across three spirited games, they displayed fantastic character and determination. The U-12 footballers edged out Roscommon Gaels, 20-16, in a thrilling encounter. The U-14 footballers were defeated by Castlerea St. Kevin’s on a scoreline of 5-22 to 4-9. Scorers: Shay Molloy (2-0), Charlie Madden (1-2), Senan Lohan (0-4), Ben McHugh (0-3), Marcus Mahon (1-0). The team meet Oran/St. Croan’s in their shield semi-final on Thursday, September 25th. The U-16 footballers are gearing up for their Division Two semi-final clash against Boyle on Wednesday in Strokestown at 7 p.m.. The minor footballers were defeated 2-21 to 2-10 by St. Aidan’s in Ballyforan.
LGFA NEWS: The U-14 girls fell short in their Division 2A final against St. Dominic’s on a scoreline of 4-7 to 3-5 in Ballyleague on Sunday last. Trailing by 2-3 to 0-1 lead at the break, a superb goal from Jessica Lohan brought the crowd to life and Kilbride within touching distance. However, Dominics remained composed and kept Kilbride at bay. Meanwhile, the intermediate ladies’ footballers edged St. Barry’s by 2-5 to 1-7 in Tarmonbarry (see round-up on Page 17. They meet Pádraig Pearses in the semi-final in two weeks’ time.
WEEKLY NEWS: Well done to the Kilglass Gaels/Kilmore ladies’ team who have reached the championship semi-final on the weekend of September 27th/28th. The junior footballers face St. Croan’s in their championship quarter-final in Ballinameen on Sunday next at 4.30 p.m.. BACK TO THE FUTURE: The U-16 team from 2000 are hosting an event at the pitch between 1 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. on September 20th. Back to the Future will also celebrate the future of the club's youngest members. Many of the 2000 team haven't worn a Kilglass Gaels jersey in 20 years. So, to celebrate the first underage championship brought to the club in 2000, they're getting back together once more for a friendly. Past and present players are invited to join and become part of the opposition — it's sure to be a fun day.

GOLDEN GLOVE: Well done to Helena Cummins who was voted the winner of the Zu Cars Golden Glove award. Helena has been an outstanding servant for her club and county over many years and is fully deserving of this award.
LGFA NEWS: The intermediate ladies’ footballers were defeated, 0-14 to 1-10, by St. Croan’s in the championship on Sunday last. A spirited comeback towards the end of the game, which included a goal from Shannon Hibbit, an inspirational point by full-back Roisin Hussey and a number of points from Sheila Brady, made for a close and exciting finish to the game.
SENIOR MEN’S TEAM: The senior men’s footballers take on St. Faithleach’s in their championship quarter-final next weekend. The team are unbeaten following group game wins against Western Gaels, Elphin and St. Brigid’s.
U-16 FOOTBALLERS: On a wet and windy Friday evening in Williamstown, Northern Gaels defeated Miltown by 5-12 to 3-13 in the last round of the championship. Leading by 2-9 to 0-4 at half time, Northern Gaels faced the elements in the second half and Miltown were level with five minutes remaining. At this stage, the lads could have dropped their heads, but huge credit to them as they responded in style by scoring 1-2 to win the game. Thanks to Milltown for the match and to Williamstown for the use of its facilities. The team have now topped the group and await details of their semi-final opponents. Keep an eye on the club’s Facebook page and WhatsApp groups for upcoming match fixtures and training schedules.
U-16 BOYS: Hard luck to the Oran/St. Croan’s U-16 boys who lost out St. Ciaran’s in Fuerty on Monday week last. Best for the team were Coman Shaughnessy, who kicked some great points from play, Dan Monaghan, who scored two brilliant goals in the first half, and Darragh Kelly, who worked hard around the middle of the field.
JUNIOR B FOOTBALLERS: The Junior B footballers had a very good 2-13 to 1-10 win against a strong Castlerea St. Kevin’s team in Rockfield on Saturday evening. Points from Liam Earley, Niall Mullen, Conor Early, Evan McNeill, Conor Harris and a well-taken goal from midfielder Diarmuid Harrington gave Oran a two-point lead at half time. The lads started strongly again in the second half, with Evan Keane scoring a superb goal to give the home side a lead they held until the end. Oran had plenty of good performances around the pitch, particularly Robbie Kenny and Evan McNeill at the back, and Evan Keane and Niall Mullen in attack.
SENIOR FOOTBALLERS: Hard luck to the Oran senior footballers who were beaten by Pádraig Pearses, after extra time, on Wednesday evening. Huge credit must also go to the management of Pat Regan, Michael Finneran, Brendan Reilly, Johnny O'Keefe and Tristan Dowd.
LOTTO WINNER: Congratulations to Michael Scanlon, Rockfield, who won the Oran lotto jackpot of €18,100 last weekend.
OFFICIAL OPENING: Patron, Seán Mulryan, will be the guest of honour at the official opening of Rockfield on Saturday next. Underage games will begin at 1 p.m., which will be followed by the ceremony at 3.15 p.m..
LÁ NA GCLUB: Lá na gClub was a great success, despite the poor weather forecast. Local piper, Paul Rice, led the Walk of Remembrance which concluded with the planting and blessing of a Tree of Remembrance by Fr. Seán Neylon. Exhibition games were provided by underage players in all four codes. Parents and children enjoyed fun activities, which included an obstacle course, face painting and welly throwing. Music was provided on the gig rig by local musicians throughout the day. These activities were followed by a family Tráth na gCeist. Ella Carty and Tessa Price were presented with their Pádraig Pearses sponsored Gaeltacht scholarships on the day. The evening’s entertainment was provided by over 20 local musicians and singers. Many thanks to all those who contributed to making Lá na gClub such a great club and community day.

CAMOGIE: The junior camogie team’s championship game against Roscommon Gaels did not go ahead in Woodmount on Saturday evening. The next game is against Four Roads in Woodmount on October 5th at 12 noon. Hard luck to the U-16 girls who were beaten by Oran in their C final on Saturday evening.

SYMPATHY: The club extends its sympathy to the Brogan, O’Dowd and McGee families on the passing of Adrian Brogan, Deerpark, Boyle. Adrian played in goals for Shannon Gaels in the 1991 intermediate final success. He joined Shannon Gaels as a minor in 1987. SUCCESS STORY: One of the biggest success stories within the club this year has been the launch of the Gaelic for Mothers and Others team. The group in St. Barry's has been a great success this year, with over 40 players taking part — many of whom had never played the game or who had dropped out of the game over the years. The girls all travelled to Kiltoom over the weekend for St. Brigid's annual blitz. They had a ball, and came away with a prize for Best Dressed team. Celebrations went on well into the evening courtesy of Keenan’s of Tarmonbarry, who kindly sponsored the team with a set of jerseys at the start of the year.
LGFA CHAMPIONSHIP: The conditions were the big winners during the intermediate championship game between St. Barry's and Kilbride on Sunday morning. Wind and rain meant that it wasn’t a day for fancy football, and Kilbride got the better of the exchanges to emerge one-point winners at the end. Despite the result, St. Barry’s will be at home to St. Croan’s in the semi-final.
RESULTS: Well done to the U-12 girls who played their last game of the season against Boyle. A huge thank you to Natalie, Karol and Siobhan for all their hard work during the year. Hard luck to the St. Croan’s/Oran U-16 Division Two boys’ team who were defeated by St. Ciaran’s on a scoreline of 3-12 to 2-10 on Monday week last. Hard luck to the combined U-14 boys’ Division Four side who were defeated, 5-8 to 1-6, by a strong St. Michael’s/St. Ronan’s side on Tuesday. Congratulations to the St. Croan’s/Oran U-16 girls who defeated St. Brigid’s on a scoreline of 4-9 to 1-6 in their semi-final on Tuesday evening. This is an amazing achievement in their first year combined at this age group. Hard luck to the combined St. Croan’s/Oran Division Two team that were defeated by a strong Roscommon Gaels side during the week. LGFA: The Roscommon Leisure Zone sponsored senior ladies’ footballers defeated St. Ciaran’s in their championship quarter-final at Mulhern Park, Fuerty, on Sunday morning. Both sides displayed some great football and teamwork, with Dominic’s securing a 1-14 to 2-5 triumph (see match report, page 19).
MINOR FOOTBALLERS: The minor footballers recorded a great win against St. Ciaran’s in Kiltoom on Thursday. As a result, they have qualified for the Division Two championship semi-final against Elphin/Ballinameen (details to be confirmed).

LGFA: The junior ladies played Castlerea in terrible weather conditions for a place in the county semi-final on Sunday last. St. Faithleach’s prevailed by 0-10 to 1-6 and will face Northern Harps in the semi-final on the weekend of September 27th and 28th.
U-14 GIRLS: Congratulations to the U-14 girls and management team who won their Division 3B final against Éire Óg on a scoreline of 4-4 to 2-6 on Sunday.
LGFA: Congratulations to the U-14 girls’ football panel and management who won the Division 2B championship final against Michael Glaveys on a scoreline of 9-9 to 5-2. The contest was a lot closer than the final scoreline suggested. The winners were two points ahead at the break, and gradually extended their advantage with some excellent individual and team scores. Many thanks to all those who made the trip to Enfield to support the girls, and everyone who facilitated the team celebrations at Ardcarne Park afterwards. This week, the club sends best wishes to its U-16 girls whose semi-final against Strokestown is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th/Sunday, September 21st. The junior ladies’ footballers defeated Clann na nGael by 5-8 to 1-4 in Ballyfarnon on Sunday morning to set up a county semi-final against Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult on the weekend of September 27th/28th.

Meanwhile, the Division Four team were victorious over Oran/St. Croan's on a 5-8 to 1-6 in Ballyfarnon last Tuesday. Well done to the U-16s who withstood a second-half onslaught from the elements, and Roscommon Gaels, to clinch a one-point victory, 3-5 to 0-13, in Lisnamult on Friday evening. The boys have now qualified for a championship semi-final against Clann na nGael. This week, the U-14 Division Four team play St. Faithleach’s in Ballyleague on Tuesday in their final group game at 6.45 p.m..
INVITATIONAL BLITZ: St. Michael’s hosted U-10 teams from Aodh Rua Ballyshannon, Elphin/Ballinameen, Castlerea, and St. Ronan's at Ardcarne Park on Saturday morning. Eight teams containing 80 players competed. Many thanks to the U-10 coaches and management, led by Mark Reilly, for arranging this special event. Thanks also to Seán Gilligan, Ronan Guckian and Stephen Sheeran for refereeing. Thanks to Lough Key for sponsoring the Player of the Tournament plaques and medals. Thanks to Joan Cummins and all the parents for providing the refreshments, organising the hall, and managing the parking. Thanks to Michael Regan for providing the speakers and the visiting teams, who were complimentary about the facilities, for tavelling. Amazingly, it stayed dry for the three hours.

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS: The junior footballers defeated St. Brigid’s, 1-13 to 1-10, in their Junior A Preliminary quarter-final at Kilronan Park on Saturday last. With Orchard Park, Elphin, unplayable, and following a toss for choice of home venue, the game was transferred to Kilronan Park at short notice. Thanks to the field committee for their trojan work in getting the field ready. On Saturday next, the team play St. Aidan’s in Elphin in the championship quarter-final at 3 p.m.. Support would be greatly appreciated.
LOTTO: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot when the draw was held last weekend.
